After all the primping, preening and posturing of the Vancouver Winter Olympics, I hope some of you have had the time to witness the simple joy of the participants at the Paralympic Games in Whistler, British Columbia — the sheer joy of simply taking part, which is truly the Olympic spirit.
In their daily lives they face innumerable challenges and have to surmount many hurdles placed in their way by society. At the Paralympics they can enjoy a level playing field — be it a ski slope, a hockey rink, a cross-country trail or a curling arena.
At the Paralympic Games they are regarded simply as athletes.
Their displays of skill, dedication and above all courage are as breathtaking as they are inspiring. It is only our attitude to disabilities that handicaps them.
