Editor's notes

Japan has a history of making up special occasions, such as White Day on March 14. With an extra national holiday added to the calendar Sept. 22, travel agencies and other promoters were quick to dub the five-day weekend Sept. 19 to Sept. 23 Silver Week.

Coming after the annual Golden Week holidays, Silver Week may sound like the best of names. The silver connotation also refers to the elderly, especially since the holidays span Respect for the Aged Day and the Autumnal Equinox.

But as this five-day holiday is not an annual event, it would have been better to have called it the Special Fall (or Autumn) Holidays.

Marketers may love catchy names and phrases, but if an event occurs once a decade or less frequently, it seems like so much trouble to have come up with any name at all.
