Gunman killed after shooting spree
A gunman in a wheelchair who fired at his neighborhood more than 100 times with a shotgun and high-powered rifle was shot dead by police after he wounded two people, police said June 29.
Police shot Shane Sime in his home June 28 in a suburban neighborhood of Christchurch, in the south.
Police said Sime, 42, was in a wheelchair because of a degenerative muscle disease.
Sime, a licensed gun owner and gun club member, had told family earlier the same day that he was depressed, Detective Superintendent Brett Kane told reporters.
Police were called after a volley of shots was fired midevening June 28. They evacuated about 25 nearby residents from the cul-de-sac as the shooting continued. A neighbor and an officer were hit by shotgun pellets, but neither was seriously hurt, Kane said. He said Sime was shot dead when police returned fire.
