EU suspends talks on Russia pact
European Union leaders warned Russia on Sept. 1 that talks on a wide-ranging political and economic agreement will be postponed unless Russian troops pull back from positions in Georgia.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy said he would lead an EU delegation to Moscow on Sept. 8 for talks with Russian leaders on the Georgia crisis.
Speaking after an emergency EU summit in Brussels, Belgium, Sarkozy said the EU would postpone talks scheduled for mid-September on a "partnership and cooperation" pact with Russia if Moscow does not withdraw in line with the ceasefire agreement that halted the fighting in early August.
"The EU would welcome a real partnership with Russia, but you have to be two to tango," Sarkozy said. "We have to re-examine our partnership with Russia."
