Election dumps leader, gives hope
In the Cyprus presidential race's shock first round, former President Tassos Papadopoulos was forced out after coming third behind former Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and communist AKEL party leader Demetris Christofias, moderate contenders pledging a speedy deal to reunify the island, which has been split since 1974 into a Turkish-occupied north and an internationally recognized Greek Cypriot south.
The two will face each other in the Feb. 24 runoff.
