Dozens dead after bridge collapses
A bridge under construction collapsed in China, leaving at least 29 workers dead and dozens of others missing, officials said Aug. 15, amid warnings over the nation's old and poorly built infrastructure.
The 268-meter bridge over the Tuo River in central Hunan Province crumbled Aug. 14 as more than 100 workers were removing steel scaffolding erected during the construction process, the State Administration of Work Safety said.
So far, 86 people had been rescued, including 22 who were injured, the official Xinhua News Agency said. Five of the injured were in critical condition.
It was not clear how many people were missing. An estimated 123 workers were at the site at the time of the collapse.
