Police foil coup attempt in Laos
A former Laotian military general and a former California National Guard officer were among nine people charged with plotting the overthrow of the Laotian government.
The group was raising money to recruit a mercenary force and buy enough weapons to equip a small army that could pull off a set of attacks with antitank missiles, grenade launchers and C-4 explosives, prosecutors allege.
Gen. Vang Pao, who immigrated to the U.S. in about 1975, was accused of being the mastermind.
