Cape Town mayor Helen Zille became head of South Africa's main opposition Democratic Alliance on May 6, vowing to attract more black voters and break the ruling African National Congress' stranglehold on power.
Zille was elected by a two-thirds majority at the party's national congress near Johannesburg to succeed Tony Leon, whose long tenure was marked by relentless criticism of the government's record on crime, corruption, AIDS and Zimbabwe.
The 56-year-old is more conciliatory and progressive than her predecessor, and is expected to reduce the animosity between her white-dominated party and the ANC.
