SAUDI ARABIA
Sweep nets 172 militants
Saudi Arabia said April 27 it has arrested 172 Islamic militants -- some of whom had trained abroad as pilots to fly aircraft in attacks on the kingdom's oil refineries -- in what was one of the biggest crackdowns to date by the nation.
The months-long sweep was a high-profile victory by the country's monarchy in its efforts to protect its oil wealth and its hold on power.
But the large number of militants arrested, some of whom were able to travel internationally and develop ambitious plans for destruction, also highlighted the severity of the extremist threat facing the government.
Interior Ministry spokesman Brig. Mansour al-Turki told the privately owned Al-Arabiya TV channel that the militants also included non-Saudis, and later said they were ready to carry out their attacks.
