Hope after U.N. troops allowed in

Sudan has agreed to let 3,000 U.N. peacekeepers deploy in Darfur with attack helicopters, opening the door to the first significant U.N. force to help beleaguered African Union soldiers who have been unable to halt the region's four-year war.

After five months of stalling, the government called April 16 for speedy deployment of the U.N. contingent and hinted it could approve a larger 20,000-strong force, which the African Union has been seeking.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called the agreement "a very positive sign" and said the U.N. and the AU will "move quickly" to prepare for deployment of the 3,000 peacekeepers and the 20,000-strong AU-U.N. force.

The United Nations has no standing army. Ban urged U.N. member states to contribute troop and police quickly for Darfur, but it likely will take months before the U.N. contingent is on the ground.
