One dead after high-speed train crash
Investigators at the scene of a fatal high-speed rail crash in northwestern England discovered that parts were missing from a set of points where the train derailed, the Rail Accident Investigations Branch said Feb. 26.
There was no evidence that they had been wrenched free by the force of the derailment.
The Glasgow-bound Virgin train, carrying 120 passengers and staff, crashed Saturday in remote countryside near Lambrigg in Cumbria, 435 km northwest of London. All of the carriages and both locomotives derailed.
Police said an 84-year-old female passenger died; 22 other passengers were hospitalized, of whom five were in critical condition.
