Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said Jan. 22 he could call early elections after his talks with Hamas' exiled chief Khaled Mashaal failed to resolve a bitter dispute and form a unity government.
A top aide to Abbas said the president would give talks with Hamas two more weeks to bear fruit before considering new elections. Officials from both sides said Jan. 22 after a late-night meeting a day earlier that the main sticking point was the wording of the official document declaring the new government's program.
