Pinochet suffers heart attack

Former dictator Augusto Pinochet, whose health problems have long helped him escape trial for abuses committed during his 1973 to 1990 rule, was recovering Dec. 4, but doctors said his life is in danger after a heart attack.

While Pinochet was being treated at a Santiago hospital, the divisions and passions the 91-year-old former strongman inspires among Chileans came to the surface. His foes and supporters brawled and lawyers argued over whether his latest health crisis is a maneuver to avoid prosecution.

Pinochet suffered a heart attack and was rushed to the hospital Dec. 3. He underwent a successful emergency angioplasty to enlarge an artery and restore the flow of blood to his heart, physicians said.
