Military, police in war of words
Fiji's military on Nov. 7 demanded that the nation's police chief resign after he launched an investigation of the army's removal of ammunition from an arsenal in the capital in early November amid rumors of a coup.

In a letter to Commissioner Andrew Hughes, Navy Capt. Esala Teleni said the police chief faced a conflict of roles over his allegations that the military had acted unlawfully in removing 8.3 tons of ammunition from storage without a valid import license.
Hughes alleges that the military used armed troops to collect the container without him issuing a license releasing them.
He said he withheld the permit because he feared the military would launch a coup against the government.
