New Muhammad cartoons criticized

Danish government officials on Oct. 9 met with ambassadors from Muslim countries to explain the background to a video showing a political group mocking the Prophet Muhammad.

The video drew criticism from Muslim leaders in Egypt, Indonesia and Jordan and raised fears of rekindling anti-Danish protests that swept the Islamic world earlier this year after a Danish newspaper published cartoons of the prophet.

The Foreign Ministry invited ambassadors from Muslim countries to discuss the video, which showed members of the youth wing of the anti-immigration Danish People's Party making drawings of Muhammad.

Foreign Ministry officials explained to the ambassadors that the government had denounced the drawings and that the footage had been removed from the two Web sites that had posted it, the ministry said.

The Danish Foreign Ministry has warned citizens against traveling to several Muslim countries because of the controversy surrounding the video, portions of which were aired by national broadcasters DR TV and TV2.
