Conservative leader losing grip?
Senior lawmakers challenged Conservative leader David Cameron on Oct. 2 to take a firm stand in favor of tax cuts, signaling the first major rift over the opposition leader's sweeping reforms of his party.
Cameron has declined to lay out clear policies since being appointed leader in December, hoping to stake out the center as he tries to revive the party's fortunes after three successive defeats to the Labour Party.
But the Conservative rank and file, meeting for their annual conference in Bournemouth, southern Britain, find the wait-and-see approach unacceptable on the all-important tax issue -- long a hallmark of their party's platform.
