In a twist on the Watergate question about President Richard Nixon, the Republican Party is struggling to answer: What did party leaders know of a congressman's salacious exchanges with underage male pages, and when did they know it?
The truth could determine not only their political futures but also whether the party can recover from the scandal surrounding Republican former Rep. Mark Foley and manage to remain in power after Nov. 7. That is the day the seats of all 435 members of the House of Representatives and 33 of the 100 senators are up for election.
The six-term Florida congressman resigned Sept. 29 after disclosures that he sent sexually suggestive electronic messages to teenage boys.
