Taliban lose 200 in fighting
Afghan and NATO forces killed more than 200 Taliban fighters in a major operation in southern Afghanistan, NATO said Sept. 3 in some of the deadliest fighting since the U.S.-led ouster of the hard-line regime five years ago.
Four soldiers with the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force were killed and seven others were wounded in the fighting in Kandahar province. Another 80 suspected Taliban were arrested and a further 180 fled the area.
"Reports indicate that more than 200 Taliban fighters have been killed since Operation Medusa began on Sept. 2," a statement said.
The casualty counts could not be independently confirmed as the battlefield could not be reached by reporters.
