Iraqi authorities have touted the capture of the man they called al-Qaida in Iraq's No. 2 as having dealt a severe blow to the group. But analysts warn that the organization has proven its ability to thrive after a leader's death.
Iraq's national security adviser, Mouwafak al-Rubaie, said the arrest of Hamed Jumaa Farid al-Saeedi, also known as Abu Humam or Abu Rana, had left the organization in a "serious leadership crisis."
Along with planning kidnappings and bombings, al-Saeedi is believed to have helped the man who authorities say planned the bombing of a Shiite shrine in Samarra, 100 km north of Baghdad, in February.
