Leftist calls for vote recount

Leftist candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, whose defeat to conservative Felipe Calderon was confirmed July 6, and his campaign staff claimed that a network of federal officials, prosecutors and possibly judges collaborated in a broad conspiracy to steal presidential elections July 2.

Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador claims this image taken from a video is evidence of a vote fraud.
They say they have evidence of the fraud, including videos like one showed to reporters July 10, in which a man in the state of Guanajuato is seen stuffing several ballots into a ballot box marked for congressional races.

The Federal Electoral Institute released a statement July 10 saying the man on film was putting some ballots that had been deposited into the wrong ballot box into the correct box.

Lopez Obrador supporters are planning to visit foreign embassies in Mexico City to demand their governments not congratulate Calderon until courts hear the leftist's appeals for a manual recount.

Calderon says the vote was clean and has taken congratulatory phone calls from U.S. President George W. Bush and the leaders of Canada, Spain and Colombia, among others.

Calderon campaign officials said July 10 that they are looking at presenting their evidence to the electoral tribunal, showing that the election was fair.
