Garcia makes stunning comeback
Alan Garcia, whose 1985-90 presidency left Peru in economic ruin, was voted back into office in a runoff against Ollanta Humala, a fiery nationalist ex-soldier endorsed by Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez.

The June 4 victory was a stunning comeback for a man whose name had been equated with political disaster -- and a rejection of a political upstart enthusiastically supported by Venezuela's anti-U.S. president.
Garcia, 57, said his victory showed Peruvians want no part of the "militaristic, retrograde model" that Chavez is trying to impose in South America.
A Humala victory would have tilted Peru toward the Chavez axis, which has extended its regional influence by gaining a loyal ally with the December election of Evo Morales as Bolivia's president.
