'War' on police leaves 133 dead
The official death toll from four days of widespread violence in Sao Paulo, South America's most populous city, rose May 16 to 133, including 18 inmates whose bodies were found after prison riots were finally quelled.
Calm returned to the city, which was paralyzed by scores of attacks, which some police have called a "war" declared by the notorious First Capital Command criminal gang, that began May 12.
But concern grew over the possibility of excessive retribution by law enforcement officials when the number of suspects reported killed by the police almost doubled, from 38 to 71, in one day.
