New emir first approved by Parliament
Sheik Sabah al-Ahmed al-Sabah took the oath of office Jan. 29, becoming the first emir of the oil-rich U.S. ally to ascend to power on the approval of Parliament rather than merely the decision of the ruling family.
His swearing in ended a leadership struggle within the al-Sabah family that had assumed crisis proportions after Sheik Jaber al-Ahmed al-Sabah died Jan. 15, leaving an ailing crown prince as his successor.
On Jan. 24, the legislature -- for the first time -- invoked the 1964 succession law and removed Sheik Saad al-Abdullah al-Sabah from power nine days after he took over. The house heard medical testimony that he was unable to carry out his duties, and temporarily gave his duties to the Cabinet, which named Sheik Sabah for the top job the same day.
