LIBERIA
First woman leader is sworn in
Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf was sworn in Jan. 16 as war-battered Liberia's new president, carving her name into history as Africa's first elected woman head of state.
The 67-year-old president has pledged to unite her country and secure the trust of skeptical foreign donors whose aid is desperately needed to rebuild. She also hopes her victory will be an inspiration to women worldwide.
Johnson-Sirleaf inherits a nation in tatters. The capital has no running water or electricity, and unemployment is an astounding 80 percent.
