Rebels sustain heavy losses
Communications Minister Hourmadji Moussa reported that regular soldiers had clashed with army deserters at the eastern border town of Adre, 1,000 km from the capital N'djamena, on Dec. 18 and more than 100 rebels had been killed in the fighting.
Scores of soldiers deserted several military camps in October and have since regrouped in the east of the country -- near the border with Sudan's volatile western region of Darfur. They have been joined by former high-ranking government officials, among them two nephews of President Idriss Deby, and formed the Foundation for Change, Unity and Democracy that reportedly seeks to overthrow Deby.
There have been intermittent clashes between the two sides since October, with the rebels sometimes escaping across the border into Sudan.
