U.S. to help anti-drug efforts
The United States will help Guatemala restructure its anti-narcotics force, reeling after the arrest of its chief on drug charges, and the Central American nation may allow U.S. personnel to be stationed at an anti-drug base, officials said Nov. 18.
Guatemala's top anti-drug investigator Adan Castillo, his deputy and another senior official were arrested Nov. 15 in Virginia and indicted the next day on charges they conspired to import and distribute cocaine in the United States.
Interior Minister Carlos Vielman said Nov. 19 the U.S. aid would largely be focused on restructuring the anti-drug agency Castillo headed, and he said he supports giving police more powers, as the Unites States has recommended.
President Oscar Berger praised the arrests -- which he said was the result of a joint effort -- and confirmed that more U.S. aid will be requested.
