Nations remember historic sea battle

In the naval base town of Portsmouth, England, Nelson's battle-day signal to his fleet -- "England expects that every man will do his duty" -- was hoisted aboard his flagship, HMS Victory. Later, officers laid wreaths on the deck where Nelson was injured, and the spot where he died.

The victory by an outnumbered British fleet Oct. 21, 1805, lifted the threat of invasion by Napoleon's armies, helped ensure Britain's naval supremacy for more than a century and cemented Nelson's reputation as the country's greatest naval hero. His statue atop a column in London's Trafalgar Square remains one of the city's most famous landmarks.

As the sun set over Portsmouth harbor, Queen Elizabeth II lit a beacon beside HMS Victory -- the first in a chain of 1,000 that were to blaze across the country.
