Low rainfall causes bottlenecks

The Amazon River in Peru dropped this year to its lowest level since records started being kept nearly 40 years ago due to a reduction in rainfall. The navy's Amazon Hydrology and Navigation Service in the river port city of Iquitos reported that the river stood at 106.09 meters above sea level in mid-September, but levels have since started to normalize.

The lower water levels in Peru caused navigational havoc, with barges traveling the 650-km Pucallpa-Iquitos route on the Ucayali and Amazon rivers taking up to 25 days to complete a journey that under normal conditions takes about five days.

The Amazon is the world's second longest river, at 6,437 km, second only to the African Nile, which runs 6,825 km.
