Partial Iraq withdrawal in cards
Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston, defense force chief since July, suggested Sept. 26 that a 450-member task force will be withdrawn from southern Iraq by May 2006 but said that Australian forces elsewhere in Iraq, including a medical unit and security detail for Australian diplomats in Baghdad, would be staying beyond that date.
The task force was sent to train the Iraqi military and provide security for Japanese military engineers. Most security in southern Iraq is handled by British forces.
Australia sent 2,000 troops to support U.S. and British forces in the Iraq invasion, and 1,400 currently remain in and around the country.
