In a new sign that an ongoing corruption scandal could have long-lasting implications, four congressional members from the governing Workers Party (PT) defected Sept. 26 to a party formed by breakaway members.
The defections now make President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's Workers Party the second largest in the lower house of Congress.
About 400 party activists have also quit PT, which has been rocked by a political scandal that started in June amid allegations the party paid bribes to buy votes in Congress and engaged in illegal campaign financing.
