Any port in a political storm
A total of 439 Uzbek refugees who had fled across to Kyrgyzstan in May after security forces violently cracked down on an uprising in Andijan, killing hundreds, arrived at Timisoara airport July 29. They will stay in an EU-funded center located in a former military barracks at the edge of the city, 500 km west of Bucharest.
The asylum seekers had been living at a U.N.-sponsored camp in Kyrgyzstan near the border with Uzbekistan, which had been pressuring Kyrgyzstan to hand them over, prompting the United Nations to make plans for moving the asylum seekers to another country.
"They will not leave this center, except for in exceptional situations such as medical emergencies or them leaving for the final destination countries," said Vasile Dragoi, who heads the National Office for Refugees. Foreign Minister Mihai Razvan Ungureanu said July 28 the Uzbeks would remain for up to six months and then would be sent to other countries, including the United States, the Netherlands and Canada.
