The Hindu Tirupati temple near Madras, India's richest, has started to check commodity exchange prices through an online broker to beat traditional supplier mark-ups of up to 50 percent. It spends about $70 million a year to provide free meals.
Sikhism's holiest site, the Golden Temple in the northern city of Amritsar, and other shrines and temples that provide meals are likely to follow suit.
