Scandal over Gross misconduct
Prime Minister Stanislav Gross announced April 9 that he would make way for a new coalition government after weeks of political crisis. He did not specify a date for his resignation, but said the Czech ambassador to the European Union, Jan Kohout, was his Social Democrat party's candidate to replace him.
The 35-year-old prime minister has said he will not step down until an agreement is reached and the plan has support from President Vaclav Klaus.
A scandal arose over how Gross paid for his luxury apartment. He first said he paid for it with his own money and a mortgage, but then he said he had borrowed money from his uncle. Czech media later reported that his uncle had borrowed the cash from a journalist.
