Microstate mourns loss of monarch
|
Prince Rainier III of Monaco
|
The funeral of Prince Rainier III of Monaco was scheduled for April 15, a week after his death in hospital from multiple organ failure at the age of 81. He had been ill for some time.
The world's second longest-reigning monarch after the king of Thailand, his long illness had forced the royal council to pronounce his 47-year-old son, Prince Albert, as regent March 31.
In his 55 years in power, Rainier is credited with turning the rocky statelet of just 32,000 inhabitants from a riviera Ruritania into a thriving banking and business center.
