Maoist rebels suffer heavy losses

The bodies of 113 Maoist rebels have been recovered following an attack on a government base in the west of the country April 7 that left three security force personnel dead.
It is believed to have been the largest clash since King Gyanendra sacked the government Feb. 1 for failing to stem the Maoist rebellion that has claimed more than 11,000 lives since 1996. The spike in violence came as an independent human rights report published April 9 stated that the Maoist insurgency claimed an average of seven lives every day in 2004. After Gyanendra declared emergency rule, imposed media restrictions and rounded up political activists, India and Britain suspended military aid.
The 11-day nationwide general strike called by the rebels ended April 12.
