CYPRUS
More hopes of an end to partition
U.N.-mediated talks preparing for a new round of Cyprus reunification negotiations may be possible in April, Foreign Minister George Iacovou said March 30.
Last year's talks collapsed when a U.N. blueprint was accepted by Turkish Cypriots but rejected by their more populous, richer Greek counterparts. The island subsequently joined the European Union divided, represented in practice only by its internationally-recognized Greek Cypriot part.
New Cyprus talks are expected after presidential elections in the island's breakaway northern Turkish Cypriot enclave April 17, which the moderate Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Talat is expected to win.
The country has been divided since a Turkish invasion in 1974.
