Daughter of ex-president found dead

Cecilia Cubas
Cecilia Cubas, the 32-year-old daughter of former President Raul Cubas, was found dead Feb. 16 underneath a house near the capital Asuncion, after she was kidnapped Sept. 21.

Her body was found in an underground chamber connected to tunnels running under the house and was identified by a dental exam.

Police have arrested several suspects in the case, including the leader of a local left-wing group that is suspected of having ties to Colombia's FARC guerrillas.

If the allegations of FARC involvement are true, it would be the first reported incident of the rebels being involved in an abduction far from their homeland.

A state attorney told reporters Feb. 14 that he has evidence showing the suspect, Osmar Martinez, was in contact with the FARC, but it was not clear if the Colombian rebel group had any role in the kidnapping.

The former president, a wealthy businessman, paid a ransom in November for his daughter's release after negotiating with her captors through e-mail.

But the kidnappers later told him that it was only a fine and cut off all communication.
