Radical Islamic cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri was charged at the Belmarsh Magistrates Court in southeast London on Oct. 19 with 16 offenses, including incitement to murder Jews, putting on hold a request from the United States for him to face trial there on terrorism charges.
"Extradition proceedings will be adjourned until the British case is dealt with, whether the charges are dropped or a trial takes place," a spokesman for Britain's Crown Prosecution Service said.
Al-Masri, 47, an Egyptian-born British national, is former head preacher at London's Finsbury Park mosque, which has been linked to terrorist suspects, including alleged Sept. 11 plotter Zacarias Moussaoui and "shoe bomber" Richard Reid.
Al-Masri was arrested in May after U.S. authorities laid 11 charges against him relating to terrorism, including allegedly trying to establish a terrorist training camp in Oregon, involvement in hostage-taking in Yemen and funding terrorism training in Afghanistan.
