CAMBODIA
Prince Norodom Sihamoni to be king

Norodom Sihamoni
The Throne Council on Oct. 14 unanimously elected Prince Norodom Sihamoni as the new monarch, replacing his ailing father, King Norodom Sihanouk, who abdicated Oct. 6.

Sihamoni, 51, the relatively unknown son of the king, is a classical dancer, choreographer and cinematographer who was most recently Cambodia's ambassador to UNESCO.

Sihanouk has strongly backed Sihamoni to take over the role he has held on and off for more than 60 years.

Powerful Prime Minister Hun Sen also threw his support behind Sihamoni.

Sihamoni has spent most of his life abroad and is largely unknown among Cambodians, but many analysts see this as an advantage for the prince who has so far avoided falling under the influence of any party or interest group.

A coronation is slated for Oct. 29.
