Former pop star Cat Stevens said Sept. 24 that he has started legal action against U.S. authorities after he was deported from the United States as a terrorist risk.
"We have initiated a legal process to try to find out exactly what is going on, and to take all necessary steps to undo the very serious, and wholly unfounded, injustice that I have suffered," the ex-singer, known as Yusuf Islam, said in a statement.
Islam, 57, who gave up his hugely successful pop career that included the hits Moonshadow, Morning Has Broken and The First Cut is the Deepest in the late 1970s when he became a Muslim, arrived back in London on Sept. 23 after being summarily removed from the United States.
He had been traveling to Washington, D.C., on Sept. 21 with his daughter when his flight was diverted to Bangor, Maine, where he was detained on "national security grounds," according to U.S. security officials. His daughter was allowed to enter the United States.
