A defrocked Irish priest bolted from the crowd and tackled the Olympic marathon leader about 5 km from the finish Aug. 29.
Cornelius Horan, 57, attacked Brazilian Vanderlei de Lima, knocking him into the crowd. De Lima was able to recover and finish, but had to settle for the bronze medal.
The Brazilian track federation protested the result and sought a duplicate gold medal for de Lima, but the appeal was rejected.
However, de Lima was presented by the International Olympic Committee with its coveted Pierre de Coubertin medal at the same time as he received his bronze medal.
In July 2003, Horan ran onto the track at the British Grand Prix in the middle of the race, forcing Formula One racers traveling at more than 300 kph to swerve around him.
