North Korea and the United States appeared to move closer to resolving their nuclear standoff as U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell and Pyongyang's Foreign Minister Paek Nam Sun met July 2 in Jakarta in the highest-level talks between the countries in two years.

Powell and Paek spoke for 20 minutes on the margins of the ASEAN Regional Forum to go over ideas for ending North Korea's nuclear arms programs that were presented in multilateral talks in Beijing, which ended June 26, the two sides said.
"There's a great deal of mistrust between the United States and North Korea. We just have to work our way through this," Powell said.
North Korea said in a statement that Paek had told Powell the two countries need not be "permanent enemies" if the United States drops its "hostile policy" toward Pyongyang.
