Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono rode a wave of public frustration with Megawati over corruption and poverty, though the poll results did not show him with an outright victory. Megawati and another ex-army general, Wiranto, were in a tight race for the second spot in the Sept. 20 runoff.

Official results from the July 5 election were not expected for 10 days, partly because of recounts of invalid ballots.
Megawati came to power in 2001 after former President Abdurrahman Wahid was forced out of office by Parliament. Voters complained of her perceived aloofness and failure to improve the economy.
