Flood death toll surpasses 1,400
More than 1,400 people have died in flash floods and mudslides in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, where rescuers May 30 discovered more than 400 bodies.
The National Center for Emergencies said 410 people have died in the Dominican Republic while Haitian officials put their death toll at 996.
Between the two countries, which share the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, 1,406 people are known to have died and many of have been buried in mass graves. Nearly 30,000 people have been forced from their homes by the May 23-24 floods.
