Manmohan Singh, the Oxford-educated economist who crafted India's economic liberalization policies, was sworn in as prime minister May 22, putting the Congress Party back in control of the nation after eight years on the sidelines.
Singh, 71, India's first prime minister to come from the country's influential Sikh minority, was pitched into the premier's job when Italian-born Sonia Gandhi refused the post after leading the party to a surprise win over Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's Hindu nationalist government in April-May elections.
The Congress Party will lead a minority coalition so it took several days of bargaining with coalition partners over key ministerial posts, before Singh could take the oath of office.
