A new political era began April 16 after a liberal party won a major election victory that ended conservative control of Parliament and gave a vote of support to the impeached president.
The Uri Party captured a majority in the April 15 election on a groundswell of support for President Roh Moo Hyun, tripling its seats at the expense of the parties that sent him into political limbo last month.
The win by the pro-Roh Uri Party -- tripling its power to 152 seats in the 299-seat National Assembly -- was a blow to opposition parties that impeached the president March 12 on charges of illegal electioneering and incompetence, suspending his executive powers.
Despite a humiliating loss, the main opposition Grand National Party rejected Uri's demand that it withdraw the impeachment motion and said the Constitutional Court must decide the fate of the president.
The court said April 16 that it won't abandon the impeachment process.
