U.N. agency cuts food aid
Nearly 3 million North Koreans will be deprived of U.N. food rations this month despite recent pledges of fresh donations by countries such as the United States, a U.N. World Food Program spokesman said Jan. 19.
At the height of the country's harsh winter, food aid pledged by Washington, the European Union and Australia will not translate into food rations for millions of hungry North Koreans.
"Between the time the pledge is made and the time the food actually gets into the country there can be a gap of up to four months," said WFP spokesman Gerald Bourke in Beijing.
The situation would probably worsen in February, Bourke said, but he had no detailed projections of how many people would be affected.
