NORTH KOREA
U.S. delegation visits nuclear plant

Yongbyon
Members of an unofficial American delegation to North Korea said Jan. 10 in Beijing that they visited the disputed Yongbyon nuclear facility but wouldn't say what they saw until they report to Washington, which is trying to arrange a new round of six-nation talks on ending the standoff over the North's nuclear ambitions.

The five Americans were allowed to see everything they requested, said John W. Lewis, a Stanford University professor emeritus of international relations.

"We did go to Yongbyon," Lewis said, referring to the nuclear facility that has been closed to outsiders since the North expelled U.N. inspectors at the end of 2002.

The group arrived in Pyongyang on Jan. 6 with the intention of visiting the Yongbyon facility where North Korea had said it was reprocessing spent nuclear fuel rods in an effort to make nuclear weapons.
