More cinemas to cancel The Cove
Two cinemas in Tokyo and Osaka announced June 4 that they will cancel screenings of the Oscar-winning documentary The Cove about the dolphin slaughter in Taiji, Wakayama Prefecture, due to protests by rightwing groups.
The latest move means the controversial movie will not be screened in Tokyo, as one of the two theaters in the metropolis planning to show it earlier announced it was backing off.
On June 4, film distributor Unplugged Inc. vowed to press on with screenings, despite rightwing group protests.
Unplugged said it canceled one screening set for June 26 at Theater N Shibuya after rightwingers — known for their ear-splitting street protests using loud megaphones — targeted the establishment.
