JAL, ANA to hike fares from October

To counter surging fuel costs, Japan Airlines Corp. and All Nippon Airways Co., Japan's two biggest carriers, said Aug. 18 they will raise airfares by as much as 10 percent starting in October for some international flights.

The price hikes come after the International Air Transport Association, the airline industry group, passed a resolution earlier in August to raise airfares, JAL and ANA officials said. Both are members of the association.

JAL said it will increase regular fares for flights to North America, Central and South America, and Hawaii by 10 percent, and by 5 percent for flights to the Middle East, Africa and other parts of Asia.

ANA also plans to raise regular fares for flights to North America by 10 percent. Fares to Southeast Asia, India, China, South Korea, Guam, the Middle East and Africa will be raised by 5 percent.
